Flexible Spending Accounts

Pay for laser vision correction with pre-tax dollars! Save up to 50% depending on your tax bracket.

Many companies offer their employees a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), also called a Medical Spending Account, a Cafeteria Plan, a flex plan, reimbursement account, Flex 125, or Tax Saving Plan. This employer-sponsored benefit allows you to pay for eligible medical expenses on a pre-tax basis. You should take advantage of this benefit, if available, to pay for any medical expenses that will not be reimbursed by your health insurance plan.

An expense considered a "deductible medical expense" by the IRS, and is not reimbursed through your health insurance plan, can be reimbursed through FSA. Laser vision correction, glasses, prescription drug co-payments, and most elective surgeries are eligible.

How Much Can I Save?

FSA saves you money by reducing your income tax. The amount is deducted from you income before Federal, State and Social Security taxes are calculated. The maximum amount you can contribute by law is $5,000. However, most companies limit the contributions to less than $5,000.

Estimated Income Tax Savings

Tax Bracket
Your Annual Contribution 15% 28% 31%
$500 $148 $213 $228
$1000 $296 $426 $457
$3000 $890 $1,280 $1370
$5000 $1,483 $2,133 $2,283

This example takes into account federal income taxes, Social Security tax at 7.65% and state income tax at 7%. State taxes will vary.

How It Works

First you need to check with your benefits manager at work and find out if the plan is offered and how much you can contribute. Usually, enrollment is in the fall and you need to determine how much you expect to spend on eligible benefits. This amount needs to be deducted from your payroll over the benefit year. Most companies allow you to spend the money any time during the year, even before it is fully accumulated in your account. What is not spent is lost, so plan carefully.

What To Do Now

Schedule a complementary screening to determine your eligibility for laser vision correction. If a candidate, you can plan on how much to put into your FSA.

Most insurance companies do not cover elective surgeries like LASIK.  However if your insurance or flex-spending plan covers some of your procedure, we will be happy to provide you with an itemized receipt of your surgery.

This fee covers the refractive surgery examination, medications for surgery, postoperative care and enhancement with a small fee for up to one year. The last scheduled follow-up exam is at 6 months. However, there is no charge for follow up exams up to one year. There is a reduced fee for previous patients who want to upgrade to CustomCornea ®. Retreatments after the first year and up to three years will be done at a reduced fee.

The IRS now allows a tax deduction for laser refractive surgery.
